Collage

Concept:
Fabricate a collage of an old master painting. This collage will later be used for a painting

Materials:
Bristol board, illustration board or a heavy paper to adhere the cut out paper to. This heavier paper will not warp from the glue. .
-H4 or H2 pencil for transferring the image
-Ruler
-Glue: a glue stick or watered down Elmer’s glue and a cheap brush will work
-Magazines (you will be cutting pages from magazines illustrations)

Approach:
Research an artist of your choice from the following names below:
Some of the names you can find in the DCCC library between NB198-887 and NC905. Also search between ND 50-11135. You may use the internet as an additional researching tool. Choose an Artist/Book and bring to class for a small presentation.

Below is an example of how to approach the collage:

Start off with the image and bristol board or heavy paper. Watercolor paper will work also. The transferred image should be no smaller than 7 inches.
Place the source on the bottom left corner of the paper and strike a line from the left corner to the top right. Using a ruler, continue the line through the paper as you see below in the second square.
Next, take a ruler and measure from the left edge of your paper onto the diagonal line until you reach approximately 7 inches.
Strike a horizontal line and a vertical line where the that measurement is located.

Measure the vertical and horizontal line from the edge of the paper to where it intersects the diagonal line. This measurement is your "window"
The example below measures 7 x 10 inches.
Center this measurement onto the paper you will be working on.
Strike a two diagonal lines onto the "window". This finds your center. Strike a vertical and a horizontal line through the center axis as seen below in the last box

Strike the same pattern of lines onto your source as seen in the first box .
With a pencil, begin to transfer the image shapes from your source onto the paper as seen in the second box
Begin to cut out shapes from color magazines to glue onto the paper as seen on the last box.
Search for the closest color mixture you can. Remember the color theory we discussed in class.
For example, the red color below is a reddish orange hue, middle value, middle intensity. HUE, VALUE, INTENSITY are the three characteristics of color Scroll to the bottom of this page to refresh your color theory.
Fill in all the shapes until your collage is complete.
