Project: Composition Deconstruction and Reconstruction
Spring, 2007
Materials:
-Sketch pad
-18 x 24-inch paper or illustration board
-Tracing paper
-H4 or H2 pencil
-Tape (blue tape or artist's tape) Remember to take lint from your shirt to
prevent paper tare.
-Conte crayons: burnt sienna, raw umber, ivory black, and white.
-Compressed charcoal..Maybe?
-Blending stumps
Objective:
Your objective is to exhibit 4 versions of the same composition using conte
crayon. The end result should yield a congruent body of work that illustrates
professional craftsmanship and successful compositions.
Requirements:
-Drawing 1 will demonstrate 2 values / colors
-Drawing II will demonstrate 3 values / colors
-Drawings III and IV will demonstrate 4 value / colors
-Each drawing must appear different
-Must use the arranged still life for the image source
-Use the golden means as source for composing the image
-Demonstrate precise flat color/value, and clean edges.

-Experiment with the medium and the design
Approach:
Using your view finder make several sketches of the still life. Think about
composition. How will the shape of the objects, light, and shadows play a role
throughout the composition? Draw 3 or 4 compositional solutions, and pick the
2 most successful (one simple one semi-complex) in terms of how the renaissance
painters up through the suprematists composed an image. Deconstruct the still
life into shapes; think of how the positive and negative shapes can be used
to illustrate the objects. Elaborate on that idea using the light source and
the different values as a reference guide to find and separate shapes. Draw
from life, but alter for compositional intentions. When developing your images
consider how harmony, asymmetrical balance, and pattern or rhythm of shape can
unify your composition. Outside of class you will fill in the shapes with different
values and color reconstructing several different compositions using the original
2 drawings as a source. Use tape, blending stumps, and your finger to achieve
a flat value/color and clean edges. Also, use tracing paper to make a copy of
the drawing to transfer onto your working surface. Have fun, work hard.
