Project I
Project: Non-objective sculpture proposal for DCCC campus
Materials:
-Sketch pad
-18 x 24 inch paper
-Graphite pencils (4h-2b)
Objective:
Propose (3) drawings for a sculpture using simple forms (rectangles, cylinders, spheres, and cones) for the Delaware County Community College Campus. One drawing will illustrate one-point perspective, the second drawing: two-point perspective. The final drawing will exhibit the sculpture in its specific site in two-point perspective. DCCC will also be represented in two-point perspective. Three-point perspective will be introduced if you are viewing from an elevated height.
Rules:
-Reveal the process. Keep the history of your lines as evidence of succession.
-You cannot use amorphous shapes.
-All of your shapes must originate from rectangles, cylinders, spheres, and
cones.
-It doesn’t mean they have to remain rectangles, cylinders, spheres, and
cones.
-The final sculpture cannot represent any recognizable object.
-Must use a combination of line and value in your final version (value scale
1-5)
-Nothing too elaborate
-Draw a one-inch border on every drawing.
-Place a human figure in the final drawing to exhibit scale of the sculpture.
-I will demonstrate in class
Approach:
Make several sketches to develop the concept (push the idea). Deconstruct these simple forms. Slice them up, hollow them out, or stack them up, do all three, what ever you like. Remember that simplicity is a virtue and also makes for a solid composition. Think of repetition of pattern and shape (rhythm). Do you want the sculpture showcasing mass (density) or an open space? Will your idea be vertical or horizontal? What will the material be? Can this stand and handle the natural elements? Will it fall on an innocent bystander to eventually tie up the schools finance in lawsuits? Actually, I don’t want you to worry too much about that, this will hinder your creative spirit. Where there is a will, there is a way (fabrication purposes). Once you have committed to a design, practice drawing the sculpture in one and two-point perspective. Begin your three drawings. Finally, take a digital photo (from several points of view) of the DCCC campus and print out an image to use as a reference for your final drawing. Your drawing of the DCCC building / campus will be more of a gestural / suggestive drawing, not too specific. Just give me an idea of the site. I will show examples.
The class will vote on the most successful drawing, and the winner will receive a prize.
