Project: Symbol Reduction
Materials:
-Sketch pad
-18 x 24-inch paper 80 weight
-Illustration board (size will be discussed in class)
-Tracing paper or use the light table
- Pencil(s)
- Permanent black marker, fine point (consider a wider point for larger shapes)
Objective:
Your objective is to exhibit 5 versions of the same object using “symbol
reduction”. The end result should yield a congruent body of work that
illustrates professional craftsmanship and creative design reduction. Tools,
kitchen utensils, children’s toys are all good sources.
Requirements:
-Must draw the object from life using 2 or 3 point perspective.
-The object size must be no bigger than an average house cat.
-Reduce the object into several shapes (a shape is an enclosed space). Some
shapes may connect where others may be isolated.
-Each design must be slightly reduced than the one before.
-The black marker should yield a perfect flat black. Craftsmanship is critical
-Experiment with several versions of your design
Approach:
Draw the form from life in 2 or 3 point perspective (consider your point of
view). Take the drawing over to the light table, and copy the image several
times. You will experiment with using just black marker and the white of the
paper to create a symbol reduction of your form. During the initial stages of
the project, you may use a soft pencil to explore different versions. Refrain
from using an outline to represent the outer edge of the form. Can you create
an implied edge? You are attempting to design the essence of the form with very
little information. The main key is to have your initial drawing perfect. This
will allow you to experiment without losing the integrity of the form.

- Ability to utilize the drawing format.

-Presentation, use of media, neatness.

-Originality, problem solving, point of view.
Completion
-Does the image seem complete and developed /evolved?
