Writing Assignment, Drawing II

Objective:

Compare and Contrast (2) drawings , 250 words (1 page double spaced)

Approach:

Select (2) different drawings from a specified exhibit or alternative source (alternative sources must me approved by the instructor). Take notes and site the obvious differences and similarities between each work. Apply the following visual language:

• Subject matter: recognizable forms within the image. If the work is abstract, use metaphorical relationships. For example, "the fine graphite lines flowed like cooked spaghetti tossed on the floor".
• Medium: materials used to make the work of art
• Cultural Associations or references
• Elements and principles of design, some examples are listed below
• Use of Color
• Texture
• line
• space
• value application
• point of view
• balance
• purpose, concept, intent, idea... all mean basically the same thing.
• style: an example is soft application or energetic application.
• Emphasis / focal point
• Sense of scale: is the subject matter human scale? how does that effect your perception?

Things to consider: FORM AND CONTENT

When comparing and contrasting works take form and content into consideration.

Form: Formal aspects of a drawing are what you can describe in regard to the elements and principles of design.

Content: Content is the idea. What concepts do you think the artist is exploring or investigating? How does the subject matter influence content? What cultural associations may affect your perception of the content? What experience do you project to the image presented? How do you think the main population would interpret the image?

Grading:

I will grade on your ability to describe the obvious differences between each work; however, higher grades will also be awarded to writing assignments that go beyond the obvious and initiate insightful interpretation, metaphorical relationships, and dialogue.
