Materials:
-Paynes gray (no color)
-13 x 17 inches arches watercolor paper
-H4 or H3 pencil
-all brushes
-water, palette, etc.
-Clamp on light
Objective:
Your objective is to develop a painting slowly layering each shape until you
reach a high resolution.
-Focus on:
-Drawing, placement, proportions, and angles in relationship to plumb verticals
and horizontals.
-Composition, Do not make small boxes on a large surface. Attempt to have the
subject matter fit the size of the paper you’re working with.
Approach:
1. Set up a still life using only cardboard boxes. Shine a light source using
a clamp on light onto your still life. Move the light around the
still life and pay attention to the different shadows you can use in your final
composition. Try to find boxes of different sizes, this will create
size and scale diversity within your still-life.
2 . Apply a light even wash over the entire surface.
3 . Layer in the masses of the darker values.
-remember you are using brown cardboard; as a result, imagine the cardboard
as a black and white photograph.
4 . Slowly allow yourself to see more information pertinent to the form of the
objects and the space around the forms.
5 . Towards the end of the painting you can allow yourself to see the “distractions”
(small areas of detail that we tend to gravitate towards first).
Grading:
• Craftsmanship
- Technical ability, use of media, and neatness.
• Completion
-how far you take the assignment
• Composition
- Ability to utilize the entire painting surface
• Draw large shapes first, and build the information off those large shapes.
• Remember to use large brushes first, and smaller brushes later.
