* Arbitrary Value Project: (drawing of a drawing)
Materials:
-18 x 24, 80lb paper
-Pencils, H4 through B3
-Chamois cloth, and / or a napkin of some kind.
-White artist’s tape
-Your last project.
Objective:
Using your previous in-class project you will create a drawing from that drawing by arbitrarily applying value to shapes (a shape is an enclosed space). You are completely changing the original drawings appearance. Some shapes may connect to other shapes; you may add lines to enclose shapes. The main objective here is to create a balance throughout the image by applying value(s). If there is too much weight and activity on one side, then try to balance the other side with similarities. Balance of form, shape, and space. Force the viewer to view the entire image as a whole (unity, gestalt)
Approach:
This image will be carefully drawn with an H4 pencil onto your new drawing surface. You are re-creating a similar version of your old drawing. To do this, on your old drawing, using a ruler, lightly draw a straight line from corner to corner. Repeat this process from the other corner to corner to create an x on your image. Where the x intersects is the middle of the image; you will then draw a vertical and a horizontal line through the x’s intersection. (You may already have these lines in your drawing from the previous exercise) You will repeat this process onto your new drawing surface. The new drawing may be slightly smaller then the previous one. Instead of measuring 9 inches from the middle intersection, try measuring 7 or 8 inches. You will be filling in a lot of shapes with graphite, so do not make your window too large. Lightly copy the image from your old surface to your new one. I will demonstrate in class. Then use a ruler to re-establish the lines.
-Using 3 values based on your value scale, (2, 5, and 9) fill in all of the
shapes.
-You choose which value goes where. (Flat Value)
-You are creating a composition based the Russian Constructionists compositions
previewed during the lecture.
