Project: 12 Hue Color Wheel
Concept:
To design a twelve hue color wheel using color-aid paper. Design expectations
and criteria will be discussed in class.
Materials:
-Illustration Board (use a Box Cutter to cut your illustration board). Stanley
is a good brand.
-Ruler / Straight edge for marking and cutting straight lines
-Protractor
-Compass
-Rubber cement
-Razor knife (preferably, exacto)
-Color-aid paper
-Imagination
Rules:
1) You may only use the materials listed above.
2) Use only 12 colors based on the color circle.
3) You may be inventive with the shapes of each hue.
4) Canvas Size: 10 x 10, Image size
9 x 9 (if your design calls for a larger size, please discuss with me prior
to cutting)
Approach:
COLOR: Fine a true blue, red and yellow (primary colors)
then find a “perfect orange, green and purple (secondary colors). Imagine
mixing the two primaries together, what would that color be? Same applies
to the tertiary colors. Here you are to imagine mixing a primary with a secondary.
What would that color be? For example, red and orange make reddish orange.
DESIGN: Break a circle into 12 equal parts by researching
and experimenting with various methods (see helpful links
above). Allow your design to evolve from process of trials and error. What
this means is, at the same time you are dividing the circle into parts, pay
attention to the natural designs that may occur during the process. Try tweaking
the design by adding or editing lines or shapes. Are there planes that create
a 3-dimensional feel? Is there a natural beautiful symmetrical design evolving?
Can you incorporate one of your initial ideas (preliminary sketches) into
the "already existing" design.
