Painting I
Project: Composition Exercise (based on Russian Constructivism and De Stijl) Cick here for image examples

Materials:
-Sketch pad
- HB or 2B pencil
-Tracing paper
-Ruler, or some sort of a strait edge, e.g. piece of wood, level, folded paper, etc.
-11 x 14, canvas, or canvas paper
Objective:
Your objective is to exhibit 2 versions of the same composition using black and white paint. The end result should yield a beginning to a congruent body of work that illustrate successful compositions and possible color studies for future projects.

Requirements:
-Drawing 1 will demonstrate 4 values
-Drawing II will demonstrate 5 values
-Each painting must appear different
-Use the golden means as source for composing the image
-Demonstrate precise flat color/value, and clean edges.
-Experiment with the medium and the design

Approach: Click here for a visual to the process.
Using only rectangles develop a composition similar to the work of the RUSSIAN CONSTRUCTIVISTS and DE STIJL. Composition: The arrangement of shapes, spaces, lights, darks, and colors within the format of an artwork. When developing your composition think of asymmetrical balance and harmony of shape, space, forms, and value placement. You are to draw 3-4 thumbnail sketches; pick the most interesting and elaborate for a final version. This image will be carefully drawn with a pencil onto your painting surface. Use a ruler and tracing paper to produce your final image on paper. On the final image using a ruler, lightly draw a straight line from corner to corner. Repeat this process for the other corner to corner to create an x on your image. Where the x intersects is the middle of the image; you will then draw a vertical and a horizontal line through the x’s intersection. You will repeat this process onto your painting surface. Lightly copy the image from the paper onto your canvas. I will demonstrate in class. Then use a ruler to re-establish the lines. Make sure your lines are all perfectly vertical and horizontal. Once your painting surface is prepared, mix 4 values (#’s 2,4,6 and 8) on your palette with your palette knife (refer to your ten step value scale). Apply the values with a brush that is adequate size for filling in the shapes with your choice of value. When developing your images consider how harmony, asymmetrical balance, and pattern or rhythm of shape can unify your composition. Attempt to create two versions by applying different value placement. Have fun, work hard.
