PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Concept:
To create (3) separate organic forms out of two dimensional paper. Design
elements to consider: convex, concave, volume, weight, shape, line, texture,
light, open and closed space.
Organic shapes are shapes with a natural look and a flowing
or curving appearance. For this reason, they are often also
referred to as curvilinear shapes. Examples of organic shapes include leaves,
plants, and animals. (Wiki Links)
Materials:
-Paper: experiment with different types of paper like Bristol
Board or Drawing Paper, drawing paper comes in several
weights like 90 lbs,80lbs, or 70lbs. (Larger drawing paper
(18 x 24 inches) will be cheaper and allow for larger paper forms (you
may already own a pad of 18 x 24 inch drawing paper from drawing class).
Use computer paper only for experimenting with design.
Adhesives: Book Binding Glue, or specific high quality paper glue purchased
from a craft store
-Scotch tape
-Fishing String (light weight)
-Glue (Book Binder's Glue works well)
-Pencil and paper for sketches and notes
ALEENE'S QUICK DRY TACKY GLUE

or PVA PH NEUTRAL

-Razor knife, exacto blade. You will need more than one blade; blades
will dull out quickly.
-Scissors may be used for large cutting
-Cutting Mat (self healing) for cutting paper. If cutting mats
are too expensive use the back of a drawing board (cardboard) or a smooth wooden
surface.
--Various size rulers depending on your project ideas. In addition
to accurate measuring, rulers are used to cut straight lines and scoring.

Rules:
1) You may only use white paper unless allowed by the instructor. ( I want you
to focus on form, not color)
2) The forms can range in size
3) Forms can hang from fishing string or sit well on a pedestal.Do not
make a pedestal or a surface for your design.
5) All forms must be organic.
Approach:
Use "Artists to Research" link above for inspiration. Each student
must begin by first making a Chinese
Lantern. As you continue, experiment by cutting slits or score
onto a sheet of paper, then twist and turn the paper to create a various unique
forms (I will demonstrate in class). Try various designs that may yield different
results. Consider organic shape, volume, space, and light. Use Scotch tape,
white artists tape, or adhesive to adhere corners or faces together.
