Concept:
To reform a circle and a square (2 separate projects). By deconstructing a shape
you must reconstruct a completely different, unique, unusual, and well designed
shape. Consider weight, balance, gestalt (wholeness), and figure ground relationships.
How can you continue to move and contain the eye as well as a simple circle
or square. What additional elements can you introduce (movement, rhythm, pattern,
multiple shapes, etc). When designing in the future take note that
a unique design can begin from a simple shape or form.
Materials:
Sketch Pad
Illustration Board (hot or cold pressed) (20 x 15 inches x 2)
Micron Pens
Sharpie markers
Pencil(s)
Triangular Transparent Ruler
Compass
18 or 24 inch Ruler
Exacto Knife
Black Construction Paper
Rubber cement
Approach:
Using a compass and a ruler begin using one shape (a circle or a square). You may use a compass or a square when deconstructing (applying lines to cut) within each shape. Take note: work symmetrically. In other words, what you do to one side of the shape do to the other. This will allow you to reconstruct the shape in a symmetrical or asymmetrical manner. Dissect your design, cut out your shapes, then try several versions of a "reformed" shape.
